Take A Stroll Down the Hanover Trolley Trail
The Hanover Trolly Trail is receiving a makeover! And on April 26, 2024, the York County Rail Trail Authority was excited to announce the completion and grand opening of two additional miles restored to the trail.
The completion of this portion of the trail connects the town of Spring Grove to the already completed section of the Hanover Trolley Trail. This will allow locals and visitors alike to enjoy a more fulfilling outdoor experience visiting Hanover and the surrounding areas. The York County Rail Trail Authority has plans to complete an additional mile in the coming year!
To walk, run, or bike the newest addition to the Hanover Trolley Trail, head over to Spring Grove Borough Park at 210 E Railroad St., Spring Grove, PA. Visitors will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in a lush, wooded area and a view of Codorus Creek.
About the Project
In 2020, the York County Rail Trail Authority purchased 8.5 miles of dormant rail line located between Hanover and the village of Bair in West Manchester Township and embarked on an estimated $14 million project to expand and complete the Hanover Trolley Trail. Originally envisioned in the 1970s to share occupancy with a sixteen-mile Met-Ed utility corridor, the Trolley Trail now has a parallel corridor that offers many advantages for trail development. Soon after the rail purchase, the authority salvaged the rails and began an aggressive trail construction plan.
With the rail corridor purchase also came the challenge of restoring adjacent portions of Oil Creek, an impaired tributary of Codorus Creek. Phase 1 of this work began in mid-April, and will be followed by additional trail construction in Heidelberg Township.
